In 1934, two stellar musicians, one a great star of stage and screen, the other a scruffy New York City street kid, meet each other and become pals. They make a deal to work together, a relationship that introduces the kid to his own immortal stardom.

In New York City, 1934, world-famous Argentine film and tango singing sensation Carlos Gardel is being groomed by Paramount Pictures to be the next Maurice Chevalier. The trouble is, he speaks no English. On the set of his new Spanish-language movie (being filmed in the Astoria, New York Paramount studios), he meets an Argentine kid who lives in New York and is working on the movie set as a gopher, named Astor Piazzolla. The boy immediately nicknames Carlos "Charlie." Astor plays the bandoneon, tango's essential instrument, but disdains tango itself. He prefers Bach and Ellington. But he does speak fluent English, with a Lower Eastside accent. In exchange for enough English lessons to get him through the Paramount screen test, Charlie agrees to teach Astor how to play tango. The relationship between the maestro and the kid gives Astor the essence of what he will use later in life to become himself an internationally renowned composer and musician. The screenplay is based on actual occurrences.
