From a farm run by a crotchety father in a small village in England, through The Great War, imprisonment and the threat of execution, teenager Reg Olcutt finds his real life in rural Italy with the woman he loves on the river that almost drowned him.

Synopsis

A teenage Corporal in the most heavily decorated unit of WWI (Queen's Own West Kent Regiment, 11th Battalion) survives the fiercest combat in Flanders, a head wound in the final and least-publicized great battle front of World War I (along Italy's Piave River), and finds himself threatened with execution by firing squad for desertion. He forges a new family and future in rural Italy, only to find he must once again face a life-and-death moment and risk everything ̶ this time for love.
Features interaction with Ernest Hemingway (in a war hospital in Milan), Benito Mussolini (as a newspaper editor in Milan), poet laureate John Masefield (on a battlefield in France), and Rudyard Kipling (at Bateman's, his home in Sussex).
